  • Please provide a copy of the geotechnical report or slope stability analysis.
A slope stability analysis was approved by the Department in accordance with Article 522.09(a) of the Standard Specifications. However, this analysis is not available at this time. (01/08/2025)

  • Regarding the MSE wall design, the typical sections show 3.5' of wall embedment, however the elevation views depict a fixed leveling pad elevation. The south abutment has over 15' of embedded wall, what is the required wall embedment? Sheet #10 dimensions the reinforced zone width at the abutment caps, but there's a special note that says "See supplier shop drawings for lengths". Please provide required soil reinforcement lengths or ratios for abutment sections and wing walls.
An addendum will be issued. The leveling pad shall be at the fixed elevation shown on the plans to allow for a temporary slope with potential future railroad improvements. The MSE Wall Detail on Sheet 10 of 38 notes a 3’-6” minimum dimension from finished grade to top of leveling pad. The MSE wall designer will be responsible for the design of the reinforced soil mass limits as required for the wall design. An amended plan sheet has been provided to clarify the minimum required reinforced soil mass limits. (01/08/2025)

  • The Earthwork Schedule on plan sheet 5 states that "Earth Excavation quantities assume on-site excavation can be used within MSE Walls". Plan sheet 10 requires Select Backfill be used within the MSE Walls. If the earth excavation material does not meet the IDOT Standard Specification for Select Backfill or the MSE Wall design specifications for Select Backfill, will the contractor be compensated to supply material that meets that specification?
Per Article 522.09 of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, the MECHANICALLY STABILIZED EARTH RETAINING WALL pay item shall include a soil reinforcing system and select fill. So, the contractor will not be compensated for any additional supply material required for the MSE wall. (01/08/2025)

  • Are there plans of the existing steel truss bridge that can be made available?
No drawings for the existing bridge are available. (01/08/2025)

  • If the BNSF Railroad hires an Inspector/Coordinator at a cost of $1200 per day, as stated on contract special provision pages 25 & 45, will the contractor be reimbursed by the department for this expense?
The Contractor will only be responsible for paying the Inspector/Coordinator cost for instances when the Contractor impacts railroad property apart from what is shown in the plans and specifications. This expense would not be reimbursed by the department. Otherwise, the Contractor will not be required to pay any Inspector/Coordinator cost. (01/07/2025)

  • Regarding the MSE wall design, per GEC-011, a strip overlap of .3H is all that is needed on back to back walls to achieve full resistance. Is a .3H acceptable to reduce the strip lengths at the wing walls?
The strip overlap shall be in accordance with the design computations performed by the MSE wall designer. (01/07/2025)
