  • On sheet 8 it calls for a traffic barrier type terminal 2 special. The pay item is for a traffic barrier terminal type 2. How is the additional rail being paid for? How is the radius rail being paid for?
The Radius and additional rail is included in this item. (06/07/2019)

  • Please confirm that all Proposed Guardrail will be installed into proposed Aggregate Shoulders Ty B (6").
An addendum will be issued to clarify the proposed typical cross sections. (06/05/2019)

  • Question #15: If precast cantilever-T wingwalls are used, which are reinforced and dimensioned per the IDOT Culvert Manual, why is it necessary for an IL SE seal on these shop drawings?
The designs from the culvert manual still require structural certification of the global stability of the footing with respect to the soil properties at the site and other factors that affect the selection of the design factors from the tables. (06/05/2019)

  • Question #16: With 5 calendar days + 15 working days, does IDOT intend to have this project completed before November 1, 2019? Or, will the contractor have into 2020 to complete this project?
It is the intention of Jefferson County is to have the project substantially completed and open traffic in 2019. (06/05/2019)

  • Questions #14: Just to be clear, mechanical joint connectors are required ONLY on the outer walls of the multi-run PCBC's (those walls against which backfill will be place), and only one connector per joint on these outer walls; correct?
1 mechanical connector is required per joint along the outside walls of the culvert. The interior walls abutting the opposite barrel do not require a connector. (06/05/2019)

  • This Contract contains the pay item, 50300265 SEAL COAT CONCRETE (345 CU YD). The Special Provision for SEAL COAT CONCRETE and Plan Sheets 10 & 11 indicate this material is to be used for backfill around the and above the precast box culvert. Per Article 1020.04, the minimum Design Compressive Strength for Seal Coat Concrete is 3,500 psi at 14 Days. 5 days is allowed to re-open the road. At what strength must the Seal Coat Conc be to allow installation of the HMA over the box?
The Seal Coat Concrete would need to provide 2500 psi to allow the installation of the HMA over the box. The Contractor has the option of substituting other materials to construct the subgrade under the pavement and shoulders, if desired. These are subject to the approval of the Engineer and would need to be constructed according to the Standard Specifications. (05/31/2019)

  • Question #11: If precast wingwalls are used, then can 14" of barrel be Cast-In-Place on each end of each run? Question #12: Would be a triple run of 10x10 PCBC an acceptable alternative? Question #13: Would IDOT consider a staggered, chevron approach to installation WITHOUT skewed barrel ends? I anticipate this will be cheaper. The headwalls could be set at the skew to parallel the road.
Question #11: This may be acceptable, if the proposed design meets the requirements of the AASHTO Design Guidelines, IDOT culvert manual and is sealed by an IL S.E. Question #12: YES Question #13: YES (05/31/2019)

  • On Plan Sheet 4 of 32, the Legend items do not appear to correctly correspond to the Typical Sections depicted on the same plan sheet.
An addendum will be issued. (05/31/2019)

  • Special Provision, SALVABLE MATERIALS, states "The Contractor shall take note of all plan details and special provisions regarding the salvage, maintenance and re-use of the existing abutments." I am unable to locate any specific notes or details in the plans indicating the existing abutments are to be removed in a manner to allow them to be salvaged. Is it the designer's intent for the existing abutments to be salvaged?
This note can be disregarded. It does not apply to this section. The existing abutments are to be removed. (05/31/2019)

  • 1. Must the precaster use the base, deck and wall thicknesses shown on the plans for the 13' span x 10' ride precast box culvert (PCBC)? 2. Will upper and lower corner fillets be allowed? 3. Will the affect of the direction of traffic at 30 degrees to the span need to be taken into account for the precast design? 4. Will IDOT allow the skewed barrel ends to be Cast-In-Place?
    1. The inside culvert dimensions need to be provided. The thickness of the structural members is variable per the Contractor's design. 2. Yes, these are allowed per AASHTO Guidelines. 3. The structure needs to be designed per AASHTO Guidelines. The structural design should account for the skew of the culvert. 4. The skewed barrel ends, headwalls and wingwalls can be cast-in-place as long as the closure limits are met to re-open the roadway to traffic. Note IDOT requirement to have 6 ft of barrel cast-in-place for horizontal cantilevered wingwalls. (05/31/2019)

  • 5. If not, will IDOT allow 14" of barrel on each end of each run to be Cast-In-Place? 6. Will LRFD design with HL93 loading suffice for the precast design? 7. Will IDOT allow precast wingwalls, or precast toe walls, or precast headwalls? 8. Would a 12x10 PCBC, per ASTM C1577, and a 14' x 10' PCBC be allowed? Or, possibly a 10x10 PCBC and 16x10 PCBC? 9. Can you confirm that all reinforcing is to be epoxy coated?
    5. No, this would have to meet IDOT requirement to have 6 ft of barrel cast-in-place for horizontal cantilevered wingwalls. 6. Yes 7. Yes 8. Yes 9. Yes, Epoxy coated reinforcement is required. (05/31/2019)
