  • Which pay item will be used to pay for the aggregate to replace the undercut material (20201200 R&D Unsuitable), as there is not a pay item for 30300001 Aggregate Subgrade Improvement?
The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (04/20/2026)

  • The dimension table in Section 1007.08 (d) of the Standard Specs states for piles “40 ft and less than 60 ft” the min. tip shall be 7” and the butt diam. shall be a min. of 13”. However, 12” diameter piles are called out. Do these piles require a min. butt diameter of 13”? Please clarify the taper requirements for each size of timber pile and the piles must meet ASTM-D25.
We agree. The 12" dimension indicated in the "4'x4' Pile Cap Detail" will be revised from 12" to 13" to comply with the minimum diameter prescribed in the Standard Specs for timber piles of this length. This will apply to all piles in pile columns 1-96. Please note, the piles in pile columns S1-S45 shall remain as indicated, with 14" diameters. (04/17/2026)

  • The bill of materials on sheet 351 lists 12,599 CY of "Porous Granular Embankment, Special", but plan quantity for that item is only 2,185 CY. Which quantity is correct? Is it possible that the other item, 20700220 Porous Granular Embankment, is somehow involved in this work? Where is pay item 20700220 Porous Granular Embankment to be used? Please provide a schedule for this material.
The quantity for PGE (special) has been revised in the SOQ (Sheet 25) as part of Addendum #01, issued 4/14/26, to reflect the total of the two locations where this material is proposed: as structural excavation backfill at the culvert, and as part of the Pile Supported Embankment system. The material 20700220 Porous Granular Embankment is to be used for the area between the top of the load transfer platform and the roadway section. Plans will be updated accordingly in a construction revision. (04/17/2026)

  • Note 3 on sheet 351 calls for the contractor to remove soil down to and elevation of 834 and then place "a layer of geogrid and geofabric", and then the ground should be brought back to elevation 835 (1 foot) with "porous granular embankment". Will this work be paid for under the items X3010104 Biaxial Geogrid, and 20700220 Porous Granular Embankment? Which pay item will pay for the "geofabric" referenced in that note?
Note 3 on sheet 351 will be revised to clarify the intent for developing a "working platform". The revised note will read: Within the roadway widening in the wetland areas, a level working platform will be required prior to placing the concrete the caps. The Contractor shall remove existing material to an elevation 1 foot below the pile cap. A layer of geogrid and geofabric should be placed at the base of the excavation and the ground should be brought back to the cap base elevation with IDOT porous granular embankment. Cost included in Precast Concrete Caps. The roadway widening in wetlands area is bounded on the East (RT) between Station 80+50 and Station 87+50 from 30 ft to 60 ft RT offset, and on the West (LT) between Station 80+50 and Station 84+50 from 45 ft to 60 ft LT offset. Offsets are measured from Proposed Barrington Road centerline. (04/17/2026)

  • In reference to special provision X1200050 - BOX CULVERT REMOVAL, please confirm the station location of the existing culvert to be removed. Currently, the special provision reads station 53+03, however, there does not appear to be an existing culvert to be removed at this location.
The station location of the existing box culvert to be removed is Station 83+22.86. The Special Provision will be updated in a Construction Revision. (04/16/2026)

  • In the area of the Pile Supported Embankment, a significant amount of material needs to be removed to reach the bottom of excavation (el. 834). Will this excavation be paid as Earth Exc. or Rem & Disp Unsuitable? Additionally, will the embankment on top of the PGE, Special be paid as Furnished Exc? It's not clear these volumes were included in the earthwork calculations.
The existing soil to be removed in the area of the proposed Pile Supported Embankment will be paid for as 20201200 REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL OF UNSUITABLE MATERIAL. The pay item for the area within the load transfer platform is X2070304 POROUS GRANULAR EMBANKMENT (SPECIAL). The pay item for the area between the top of the load transfer platform and the roadway section is 20700220 POROUS GRANULAR EMBANKMENT. Plans will be updated accordingly in a construction revision. (04/15/2026)

  • On Sheet 325 calls out the use of "Timber Matting". Note 6 on sheet 325 (RW-1) states "Material, limits of installation, and removal time frame for timber matting shall be as approved by the Engineer." • See sheet #343 and the typical section thru drilled soldier pile. There is no call out for the drilled diameter of the drilled soldier piles. Typically, a certain drilled diameter is provided by the designer. Please clarify the intended diameter of the drilled soldier pile.
The diameter to be used for drilling and setting the soldier piles (2'-0") will be added to the "Typical Section Thru Soldier Pile Wall" shown on Sheet 333. This is the diameter used in computation of the plan quantities, so no further adjustment is needed. (04/15/2026)

  • Please indicate limits of PGE (spcl) if it is to be used as backfill for the box culvert as indicated in previous Q&A. Only indicated in plans as a 1'-6" layer above the pile caps.
The item PGE (special) is used within the area of the pile supported embankment system, generally between stations 80+50 and 87+50. It is used between the pile caps for the PSE system (1' depth all around caps), in the load transfer platform (depth varies), and to backfill the 2 feet of structure excavation on either side of the culvert at ~ Sta 83+30. Reference Sheets 310 and 351 for details. (04/15/2026)

  • We anticipate working in multiple activities being performed in each stage. If we have are required by IDOT to have two separate technicians monitoring work in two separate areas of the job on the same day, does that count for payment as two calendar days of monitoring (pay item 66901006)?
In no case should more than 1.0 calendar day be paid on a given calendar day for pay item 66901006. It is a single monitoring day that gets paid for, and it is not 2 calendar days for 2 people. If multiple personnel are needed to cover regulated substances activities at multiple locations at once, the contractor should bid a per calendar day rate that reflects this. (04/14/2026)

  • There are non-special waste areas all over this project. If there is any incidental excavation related to work being performed, and the material is a non-special waste that can't be reused onsite, will that spoil be paid as 66900200 Non-Special Waste to go to a landfill? What if the material is unsuitable to be reused on-site?
The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (04/14/2026)

  • Stone Riprap Class A4 (28100107) is shown in north barrel of the new 12x6 Box Culvert at a thickness of 1'. By specification A4 is 16" of Riprap and 6" of bedding material. Clarification is needed as to what is required.
The 16” depth stops at the barrel of the culvert. The rip rap extends 5’-0” into the culvert at a depth of 1’-0” and then slopes down to the top of bottom slab elevation over the course of 10’-0” at the inlet and outlet. The remaining portion inside the north barrel that does not include the stone rip rap will eventually be filled with future natural substrate. For any effected quantities, they will be revised accordingly via an addendum that will be issued. (04/10/2026)
