  • Can you please provide the existing topsoil elevations (match elv. (turf) and slope on the Bituminous Milling and Paving Table so we can determine how much topsoil (which is incidental) will be needed for the Shoulder Adjustment pay item?
The topsoil required for the shoulder adjustment pay item can be estimated by use of the average end area utilizing the new and existing pavement grades provided and measuring the width (10’ minimum) as shown in the marking and landscaping plan at each location. (06/08/2023)

  • Can the Bituminous Paving and Milling Table from sheet 22 and 23 of the plans be provided in an excel file?
The Bituminous Paving and Milling Table from the plans can be transposed by the contractor and will not be provided as an excel file at this time. (06/08/2023)

  • Will string line for paving be required on the VD leveling lift, 2" Surface lift and 1.5" Surface lift?
String line or an electronic grade control method as approved shall be used for the Leveling lift and 2” surface lift to establish the proper grade and slope of the pavement. A ski may be used for the final lift after grade has been established and shown to be correct. Grade shall be checked as specified in sections 401-5.3 h. and 401-6.2 d. (06/08/2023)

  • To be clear, Policy memorandum 22-2, dated February 10th 2022, applies to this job correct?

  • Despite the Inertial profiler being specified, in lieu of that can the contractor have the option to use the straightedge instead. this would be a more accurate metric and the profilograph spec is quite outdated.
The Contractor is to use the straightedge for daily smoothness quality control as specified in section 401-5.3 g. The Runway also requires a Profilograph smoothness test as part of the acceptance criteria as specified in section 401-6.2. (06/05/2023)

  • In the specials in regards to Test Strips, 401.3.5 and 401.3.5d speak to 75 ton one lane, stop, cut the edge, wait till mat is 175 or 4 hours, pave the last 75 ton. But in in 401.3.5d (2) 50 ton goes up then growth curve then pave it all out. this is conflicting. then there is the note that the contractor can use there own discretion for best practices. Can we just pave 150 ton in one lane. stop, back up, pave out another 150 ton call that the test Strip? this would be more Accurate.
The test strip shall be a minimum of 150 tons. The growth curve shall be completed after 50 tons has been placed to line out the plant. The test strip shall be placed in two lanes of the same width and depth of the lanes to be used during production paving. The length of the lanes shall be at the discretion of the contractor and can be further discussed at the pre-paving meeting. The method to be used to cut back cold joints during production paving shall be used on the longitudinal construction joint. The cold joint for the test strip will be an exposed construction joint at least four (4) hours old or when the mat has cooled to less than 175 F. (06/02/2023)

  • When we complete the surface and then profile it with the specified inertial profiler does that go to Springfield for the grind list like on IDOT jobs or is it between us and the RE to mark out grinds and fix?
The results of the profilograph shall be shared between the contractor and the Resident Engineer to review the results. (06/02/2023)

  • Per page 233 in the standard specs, an MTV is required on this job, or is the runway below 1000,000 lbs?
The Material Transfer Vehicle (MTV) is not required for this construction project, but is recommended for all pavements where the weight of the MTV will not damage the pavement structure. (06/02/2023)

  • What oil do you want for the sand mix crack repair? It is not in the 2020 spec book.....PG58-28 seems appropriate.
