  • Please confirm that the "Top Down Construction Method" specified for SN 101-0204 (I-39 NB over I-39 SB) on plan Sht 865 has been analyzed as being structural adequate for the loading conditions in Sequence Steps 6-9 and that the contractor does not need to provide any temporary shoring or bracing that is not shown.
The piles at the piers were designed to be stable under traffic during construction using the top down construction method as shown in the plan set without additional temporary bracing needed until the pier stem wall is completed. (06/09/2023)

  • Please provide all available Soil Boring data pertinent to this project. Currently, the only borings provided have been in reference to adjacent structures and basins. Furthermore, please provide the full Soil Boring data for the borings shown on the Basin Grading Plans (Sheet No. 626 - 632), as opposed to just the assumed or detected rock elevation.
Available soil boring data will be placed in the ADDITIONAL INFORMATION folder online for the contract. (06/09/2023)

  • Several areas within cross sections do not provide end areas for earthwork. One example is sheets 1039 - 1048. However, excavation work is clearly shown to construct the improvements. Please provide end areas. Please confirm if the earthwork shown in these cross sections is intended to be incidental and for reference only.
Earthwork is not intended to be incidental. Volumes are included in the earthwork table or end areas are included in other stages. Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/09/2023)

  • Reference item 542JA072 for 72" Jacked culvert. This pipe is directly in line with existing 60" culvert and is shown to be constructed during 4 separate stages. Please clarify the intent of this being a jack & bore pipe vs open cut as it is not feasable to jack through an existing 60" culvert in multiple separate stages.
The intent is for Pipe P-A101 to be jacked in a single stage. Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/09/2023)

  • The MOT staging plan shows the center median barrier base on US-20 to be built in stg 2 and the median wall constructed in stg 5. In stg 3 there is a section of US-20 where the traffic is riding over the median barrier base. This seems to be in conflict with the lighting foundations that have to be constructed within the barrier base. Please clarify if the lighting foundations and associated anchor rods/conduits work have to be constructed in stage 5 and not in stg 2 as the MOT drawings show.
Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/09/2023)

  • The contract documents do not identify substructure removal limits for Bid Items "Removal of Existing Structures No's 1-5". There is not sufficient information in the cross sections to accurately determine the finish grades at each structure element to be removed. Please provide the removal limits for these items.
Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/08/2023)

  • Can the contractor work over live traffic on US 20 if it does not cause an impact to the winter traffic configuration?
Contractor will be allowed to perform only offline work during winter shutdown, only with the advance approval of the Engineer, and subject to weather conditions. Such work will not be allowed if it will impact the winter traffic configuration, require any additional project signing, or result in any other impacts or hazards to traveling public. (06/08/2023)

  • Due to the extensive amount of work and short completion schedule, can the contractor work through the winter if the contractor does not impact the winter traffic configuration?
Contractor will be allowed to perform only offline work during winter shutdown, only with the advance approval of the Engineer, and subject to weather conditions. Such work will not be allowed if it will impact the winter traffic configuration, require any additional project signing, or result in any other impacts or hazards to traveling public. (06/08/2023)

  • Is a delay in material procurement considered an excusable delay if it is due to an industry wide shortage?
Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/08/2023)

  • The Proposed typical sections is showing the gore areas to be constructed as CRC pavement. The roadway plan and profile sheets are pointing to the gore areas as PCC Shoulder/Stab. Subbase HMA 4 / Agg Subgrade Impr 12 or sometimes not stating anything on the drawing. Please clarify if the gore areas should be CRC Pavement or PCC Shoulders.
The gore pavements should be constructed as follows: Ramp BD and US 20 – CRC pavement Ramp DB and US 20 – CRC pavement Ramp BD and Ramp AD – CRC pavement Ramp DB and Ramp DA – PCC pavement Ramp DA and US 20 – PCC pavement (06/08/2023)

  • Sheet 806 Typical box section is not clear if the box requires a 5/16" both outside and inside.. Should the weld be required on the inside this prevents the box from being spray coated.. In lieu of the internal weld would a 3/4" landing extension of the flange be acceptable using a 5/8" fillet weld?
The web-to-flange weld callouts for the box girders indicate a 5/16” fillet weld on the inside and outside of each web. Application of metallic spray coatings in a confined space was considered when developing the weld details and coating requirements for the box girders. A single-sided fillet weld of a larger size will not be permitted for these connections. (06/08/2023)

  • The Interim Date for Linden Rd is 11/22/23. Completion of SN101-0216 (Linden Rd over I-39 SB) and SN101-0212 (NB I-39 over Linden) are tied to this date. Accounting for material lead times and the 30 day hold on PPC beams over 100', the procurement times for the PPC beams for these bridges from order to delivery is 14-16 weeks. Assuming an early to mid-Aug contract execution, beam procurement is very much an issue. Please consider pushing the Interim Date to a more feasible timeframe.
Material procurement and the 30-day hold were considered in establishing the interim completion date. Please note that the plans allow for the fabricator to substitute grade 60 rebar for WWR. For SN101-0212 (NB I-39 over Linden), additional closures are allowed per TRAFFIC CONTROL AND PROTECTION, STANDARD 701401 (SPECIAL). (06/08/2023)

  • Were material procurement times factored in when setting the completion dates?  In creating a project schedule and having discussions with material suppliers and fabricators for major components including precast MSE panels, precast bridge beams, bearings, and steel bridge beams, they are providing feedback on procurement timelines that will not coincide with the staging and milestone requirements set forth by the DOT.
Material procurement and the 30-day hold were considered in establishing the interim completion date. Please note that the plans allow for the fabricator to substitute grade 60 rebar for WWR for precast beams. (06/08/2023)

  • The Specification for the Interim Completion Date states "Completion of the entire new structure is encouraged .... but not required." It also indicates that all structure elements requiring a full closure of Linden is required, but not limited to substructure, superstructure, etc. Please clarify this and also if short term closures (temp closures) are allowed.
Additional closures are allowed per TRAFFIC CONTROL AND PROTECTION, STANDARD 701401 (SPECIAL). (06/08/2023)

  • There is a pay item for 73 LF of 24" Jacked Pipe Culvert, yet there is no quantity on the pipe schedule and we were unable to locate it on the plans. Please Clarify.

Structural steel for SNs 101-0204 and 101-0207 shall be metallized and painted similar to SN 101-0215. An addendum has been issued with painting notes and details. (06/08/2023)

  • Part 2 of 2: Trying to accommodate blasting spec will lead to unusually large blasts which will cause safety concerns for contractor and the traveling public. Blasting only allowed during a 1 hour time period and in the morning will potentially require after hours loading of explosives and create security, safety, and logistics concerns. Will IDOT consider allowing Contractor to plan the timing and quantity of blasts that will be the safest and most productive for the project?
If the contractor elects to use blasting to assist with rock excavation, the Engineer will provide final approval of the blasting plan. Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/08/2023)

  • Item 14 Shoulder Subbase CA6 or 8, 4" in the proposed typical sections is noted as cost to be included in the PCC Shoulder, please clarify if this note is correct and the subbase under all of the PCC shoulder is indeed incidental to the PCC Shoulder item. This does not seem to be a typical industry practice
Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/08/2023)

  • Part 1 of 2: Reference special provisions for Rock Blasting. Please clarify the reason behind restrictions on number of blasts limited to 8 and only blasting on Saturdays. Considering the need for pre-split, trench blasting, and mass blasting in several areas, the limit of 8 blasts will not be attainable.
If the contractor elects to use blasting to assist with rock excavation, the Engineer will provide final approval of the blasting plan. Project shall be bid according to the bid package. (06/08/2023)
